William A Hickey

William A. Hickey passed away on November 28, 2017 in the loving care of Hope Hospice House in Fort Myers, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, four children and nine grandchildren.

He and Barbara were long-time residents and snow birds of Sanibel Island where they divided their time between South Bend, IN and later, Lexington, KY.

Upon graduation from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1957, he entered the University of Notre Dame graduate school and earned a Ph.D. in Biology.

He entered Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN in 1960 as a biology instructor.

During his 40 years in higher education, he distinguished himself as a respected professor of biology and nationally recognized insect geneticist, working in the area of the transmission of yellow fever.

In 1986 he became president of the college until his retirement in 1996.

Immediate arrangements are under the direction of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens. Memorial services will take place in late spring, 2018 in South Bend, IN.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Holy Cross of Notre Dame, IN or the Hope Hospice House in Fort Myers, FL.
