Junonia, albino fighting conch found on Sanibel

May 15, 2018
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Jim Shaffer, of St. Johns, was visiting the islands with his wife, Kathy, when he found two shells. On May 12, he found a junonia partially buried in the sand near the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa in the evening hours. The following evening in the same area, Shaffer found an albino Florida fighting conch while digging through the sand for shells. He noted that he has found live albino conchs before, but never just the shell. As for the junonia, it is the second time he has found one. Shaffer and his wife were visiting the island about 40 years ago when he discovered his first one.
